Where to buy BBQ sauce in Brussels

Saturday, 20 August 2011 15:29 by nico

For those who are wondering where to find good BBQ sauce around Brussels, here are some addresses:

  • In most Carrefour supermarkets:
  • In the Carrefour Mont-Saint-Jean in Waterloo - Chaussée de Charleroi 579, 1410 Waterloo:
    • HP Original
    • the complete range of Jack Daniel’s sauces (whose I'm not really fond)
    • Hunt’s Original (which is a typical KC Style sauce, very thick and sweet)
  • On Mexigo.be or at their store - rue François Dons 47, 1050 Ixelles
    • Bull’s Eye Original (one of our favorites !)
    • Bull's Eye Texas (a spicy one)
  • Stonemanor - rue Théophile Delbar 8/A, 1410 Waterloo
  • Total Gas Station - 254 Chausee de Waterloo, 1640 Rhode-Saint-Genese
    • Bull's Eye Original
    • Budweiser Barbecue Sauce
    • Budweiser Smoked Barbecue Sauce

Most of these sauces are mass-market sauces but they are worth buying. If you know any other place to find sauce in Brussels or Belgium, please tell !

UPDATE: Although it's not based in Brussels, you can order Sweet Baby Ray's, KC Masterpiece, Bull's Eye and Hunt's BBQ Sauces on Smokehouse.be

BBQ Omelet

Sunday, 31 July 2011 13:09 by nico

Eggs and barbecue sauce go well together and when I want to eat something good but doesn’t have much time to cook, a barbecue omelet is always nice.

Just pour barbecue sauce (in this case Bull’s Eye Original) to your omelet while cooking, you won’t regret it ! I usually add cheddar cheese for a creamy omelet.

Small tip to get a puffy omelet that doesn’t stick to the pan: add some baking soda to the mix before cooking.

Homemade BBQ sauce

Monday, 27 June 2011 22:07 by nico

You can find thousands of recipes of barbecue sauce on the net, but none on this site so it’s time to share a sweet sauce I regularly make for my ribs.

For 1 1/2 cup of sauce (36 cl):

  • 5 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 cup (25 cl) apple juice
  • 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp molasses (or add one more tbsp of brown sugar)
  • 1/2 tbsp honey
  • a few drops of Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce (or cayenne pepper)
  • onion powder
  • garlic powder
  • salt and pepper
  • a bit of brown corn starch to make it thicker

Mix all ingredients together (except corn starch that you must add at the very end) and let it simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.

      Happy cooking !

Serious Eats talks about barbecue sauce

Monday, 23 May 2011 11:35 by nico

I'm a frequent reader of Serious Eats, a family of blogs about food (reviews, recipes, techniques and so on...) if you're a food geek, I strongly recommend that you add their feeds to your RSS reader !

Anyway, they've recently published a lot of articles about barbecue sauce which are worth reading Smile

Regional barbecue sauce recipes

Perhaps you ignore it, but barbecue sauce is more complex than it seems ! It comes in a variety of recipes depending on the region where it's made. They've published 3 recipes so far:

These articles point out differences between these sauces, which all have common ingredients, but differ in use, consistency and taste. I'll try to write a more detailed article about regional barbecue sauces. You can read more about this subject in the Serious Eats article A guide to American barbecue sauce styles

Reviews

They also tested some sauces, what Brian from Barbecue Sauce Reviews and I love doing. They focused on 16 US sauces that you can find in grocery stores.

I tasted 5 sauces amongst the 16: Bull's-Eye, Sweet Baby Ray's, Jack Daniel's, Hunt's and Budweiser.
Good news for Belgian BBQ sauce lovers, you can find 4 of these 5 sauces in Belgium (Sweet Baby Ray's is only available in the US) ! I haven't reviewed all of them on the blog yet, but I'll do it in the next posts so stay tuned Wink
